Shehla Rashid Shora is a left activist and politician, known for advocating so called Tukade Gang. She was vice president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union in 2015-16. She was a member of the All India Students Association, Communist Student Wing.
Shehla Rashid was born in the old city of Srinagar in the Habba Kadal locality, Jammu, and Kashmir, India. Shehla Rashid Shora is her native name. She studied computer engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar. Then she joined the Jawaharlal Nehru University, completing an M.A. in sociology. Shehla also participated in agitation for the release of Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others who were arrested on charges of sedition in February 2016 for participating and organizing anti india sloganeering as well as celebrating 2001 Indian Parliament attack master mind Afzal Guru.
Political Career :
Shehla Rashid had joined Jammu & Kashmir People’s movement (JKPM), a political party started by former IAS Officer Shah Faesal. However she has now resigned from the party.
Controversy :
- Aligarh Muslim University Student Union filed a First Information Report against Shehla Rashid in February 2017, alleging that a Facebook post she had made used objectionable language about Muhammad.
- On 27th October 2018, Shehla Rashid welcomed newly converted Irish singer Shuhada Davitt into a Muslim community which generated online backlash. Several days later She deactivated her Twitter account for a time being.
- On 16 February 2019, Shehla posted a Tweet stating that 15-20 Kashmiri girls trapped in a hostel in Dehradun for hours now. mobs outside are baying for their blood. Police is present but unable to disperse the mob. The Uttarakhand police subsequently filed an First information report against her under sections 504, 505 and 153b of the Indian Penal Code for disrupting public tranquility and intent to provoke breach of peace by spreading rumor.
- In 2019, Shehla Rashid claimed that Indian army is indiscriminately picking up men, raising houses and torturing people as a consequence of Indian revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status (Article 370). The allegation was rejected by the army as baseless. Supreme court lawyer Alok Srivastsava filed a complaint under offense of sedition and sought criminal action against Shehla Rashid over her allegations.
